Museums and Galleries

Make the most of your time in Glasgow and immerse yourself in the wealth of art and culture that the city has to offer. Glasgow's public art collections are renowned as amongst the finest in Europe. With a huge selection of museums, art galleries and theatres it would take much longer than a day to discover every place of interest. However, if you only have a day, here are some of the highlights you shouldn't miss!

You could start in the West End by visiting the world-famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The museum has just re-opened after a £27.9 million, 3 year long restoration project and is well worth a visit. You could spend your whole day exploring this innovative place but if you are planning to take in some other sights then make sure that you do not leave without seeing, Sophy Cave's Expression 2006, which is an installation of heads on a grand scale, the Spitfire LA198 hanging from the ceiling of the west court and the Salvador Dali's Christ of St John of the Cross painting. Bought by the city in 1952 for the then princely sum of £8,200, and now valued in the tens of millions.

While in Glasgow you should take in at least one of the numerous Charles Rennie Mackintosh attractions. These sites include The Mackintosh House, Glasgow School of Art and the newly refurbished Mackintosh church at Queens Cross. The Church is one of a kind as it is the only church ever made to Mackintosh's design. It now has new interpretive resources and an extended activity programme and is a must-see for Mackintosh enthusiasts everywhere. If you are interested in finding out more about Mackintosh then it is worth while purchasing the Mackintosh trail ticket which gives you entry to all participating Mackintosh venues in and around the Glasgow area.

For lunch stay in the West End and sample one of the many cosmopolitan restaurants or cafes situated in the area. You could try Stravaigin 2 on Ruthven Lane or Oranmor at the top of Byres Road which houses two bars and two restaurants. You can get bar meals in both the bars and excellent Scottish fayre in the restaurants.

After lunch why not hop on the Subway and get off at the Buchannan Street station and take in the sights at the Lighthouse on Mitchell Lane which contains the award winning Mackintosh Centre and Mackintosh Tower which gives you stunning views of the city. It offers an unrivalled opportunity to experience Architecture and Design through a changing programme of exhibitions.

For those football enthusiasts you will want to visit The Hampden Experience before you leave. It is situated on the South Side of the city and can be reached by taking a train from central station to Mount Florida from where it is within walking distance. The Museum reveals the sights, sounds and stories of the world's favourite game, in the country that took football to the world. It also offers stadium tours where you can see the Stadium as the players do on Matchday. An enthusiasts dream and a great way to end the day!
